          <description>
            Turkey looks to Europe as beef price hits €8/kg
Turkey is now looking to the EU as a possible source of fresh beef amid tight domestic supplies and soaring prices.
On the domestic market, the deadweight price in Turkey has increased to the equivalent of €8/kg, with live cattle trading at the equivalent of €4/kg. Traditionally, steep taxes excluded importing countries from cashing in on the strong market. However, in mid-September, the Turkish government moved to ease market conditions by slashing import taxes. In the case of fresh beef, taxes were reduced from 225% to 30% with the tax on cattle imported live slashed from 135% to 30%. The duty on live lamb less than one year old was reduced from 135% to just 20%.

            Turkey - Research into Halal Ritual slaughter
          </title>
          <description>
            Halal practices were discussed in a meeting in Istanbul earlier this year, and recommendations are to be published early in June.
What percentage of meat is currently slaughtered according to halal or shechita practices? What is the impact on animal welfare and how can this be improved? How is religious slaughter regulated in the various EU countries? The outcome of these and other questions were presented on 15 to 16 March in Istanbul, at the end-of-project meeting of the EU DIALREL project (dialogue on religious slaughter), in the presence of some 80 participants – including legislators, animal scientists, sociologists and representatives of the religious communities concerned.

            Turkey - Poultry for Russia
          </title>
          <description>
            Russia&apos;s request for 500,000 tons of white meat from Turkey has caused disagreements among many in the sector, according to H&amp;#252;rriyet Daily News. While the government expects the move will further develop the country&apos;s agriculture, many sector players argue demand will far outstrip Turkish producers&apos; ability to supply the meat and say such exports would increase domestic prices.
