            Hong Kong - The swine flu was never an epidemic as reported
          </title>
          <description>
             The H1N1 flu virus has been spreading quietly in pigs in Hong Kong and swapping genes with other viruses, and researchers said the findings support calls for tighter disease surveillance in pigs before new bugs can emerge and infect people.

             The H1N1 flu virus has been spreading quietly in pigs in Hong Kong and swapping genes with other viruses, and researchers said the findings support calls for tighter disease surveillance in pigs before new bugs can emerge and infect people.
The finding, published in Science today, is important as it supports the theory that flu viruses infecting swine can swap genes with other viruses that are in pigs, including more dangerous bugs like the H5N1 or H9N2 bird flu viruses.

            Hong Kong - New abattoir plans scrapped
          </title>
          <description>
            Official sources report that the government has decided to shelve the development of a poultry slaughtering centre as the latest scientific assessment shows the risk of avian influenza in the city is now very low, said Hong Kong&apos;s Secretary for Food and Health, York Chow yesterday (1 June).
Dr Chow said: &amp;quot;The decision is based on science, with the health of the public as an overriding concern,&amp;quot; adding scientific data shows the risk of human infection by avian flu has been reduced to a minimal level.

            Hong Kong - Government inspectors look at poultry farms
          </title>
          <description>
             Dr Chow first visited a poultry farm that makes use of enclosed farm sheds. The farm has installed an evaporative cooling system in poultry rearing.
He then visited a traditional poultry farm which has upgraded its biosecurity measures by adding disinfection facilities and installing sturdy and non-malleable bird nets to prevent wild birds from entering sheds.

              The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 1 dated 26 May to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The report covers two outbreaks of FMD at what appear to be related pig farms on 19 February. On the first, 500 pigs were affected out of a herd of 928. There were no deaths reported, nor animals destroyed. On the other farm, all 590 pigs were affected, and one animal died.
