          </title>
          <description>
             Producers in Far West NSW should expect to see plenty of lambs on the ground this season.
A great season and plenty of lambs go hand in hand, and are all the more important considering the high value of stock at the moment.

            Dairy farmers are being warned not to expect a big pay rise despite a surge in world prices.
Prices increased almost 20 per cent at this week&apos;s global dairy auction, due to tight world supply and strong demand from China.

            Australia - Feedlot cattle
          </title>
          <description>
              Lotfeeder margins were reportedly squeezed throughout August, with prices for both major inputs, feeder cattle and grain increasing, while returns for the finished product continued to be hampered by the higher A$ and sluggish export demand.
Higher young cattle prices were sustained in August with the EYCI reaching its highest level in four years, at 369.25&amp;#162;/kg cwt. The EYCI has averaged 7% higher during the first eight months of 2010, and for August was 10% above the corresponding period last year - fueled by restocker demand on the back of the much better season. Saleyard averages for yearling steers (C2 330-400kg) during August averaged 11% higher on the previous year, at 196&amp;#162;/kg lwt.

            Brazil - Cattle prices firm
          </title>
          <description>
            Brazilian cattle prices continue to rise as supplies remain tight, with prices starting to approach the high levels of 2008 prior to the global economic and financial crisis.
While the industry initially expected a recovery in cattle throughput by early 2011, revised estimates indicate that the recovery may take longer (AgraFNP). The anticipated delay in throughput comes as a result of the high prices for calves witnessed across the market in recent month, suggesting that producers did not retain the required breeding cattle in previous years.

            N.Ireland - Good trade for store cattle

          <description>
            In this type of environment one would expect reduced producer confidence. However, if recent store prices are anything to go by, confidence would appear to be robust. Over the last six weeks, store steer and heifer prices have been holding up well and for the most part, have been slightly higher than last year’s prices. DARD figures show that over the last month, there has been a significant increase in the price paid for 150-300kg steers (see Figure 1).

The Auckland dairy multinational and the world&apos;s largest exporter of dairy products said the average selling price for whole-milk powder was US$3,522 a metric ton, against US$2,974 a ton in August.

          <description>
             Agriculture continues to outperform in 2010 and be one of the bright spots in a very uncertain economy. The USDA now estimates that net farm income will rise 24% in 2010 due to higher returns for soybeans, cotton, and livestock producers. The department also raised its estimates of U.S. farm exports due to strong demand for U.S. grain due to the drought in Russia and Eastern Europe and China’s unexpected transition to a net corn importer.

            H.J. Heinz Co (HNZ.N) Chief Executive William Johnson said the global economy was in the worst state he has seen during his 35 years in the consumer goods industry and that he would focus on deals in emerging markets to boost company sales.
Johnson also indicated that Heinz&apos;s second-quarter earnings could fall below analysts&apos; estimates, though the company stood by its full-year forecast.

             Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this week launched a new feature on the &apos;Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food&apos; website to highlight local and regional food systems and the multitude of connections being made between farmers and consumers. The new online resource advances a national conversation about food and agriculture and highlights the importance of local and regional food systems – one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture – to American agriculture, the economy, and rural communities.

          <description>
            Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro is turning up the pressure on USDA for stronger regulation of non-0157 pathogens. Delauro’s move comes following Cargill’s weekend recall of 85-hundred pounds of ground beef over concerns about a connection between E.coli 026 and three illnesses in two states. This was the first recall directly relating a beef product to illnesses traced to a non-0157:H7 pathogen

               A new implementation guide for applying traceability standards in the U.S. meat and poultry supply chain has been published by the Meat and Poultry B2B Data Standards Organization. The document was developed with U.S. meat and poultry suppliers and retailers to provide consistent, practical product-traceability guidance for industry-wide use. It defines minimum requirements and best-practice recommendations for tracking products as they move from suppliers to grocery retailers.

            USA - People do not realise they go from the frying pan to the fire
          </title>
          <description>
             2010 has been a difficult year for many people, what with factory closings, bankruptcies, home foreclosures, and widespread unemployment, but the recent recall of nearly half a billion eggs due to salmonella contamination has struck hard, even in households and businesses that had otherwise escaped the economic crisis. Consumers are avoiding eggs in droves, and even those who are willing to take a chance are finding supplies awfully thin at their local grocery stores. And when you&apos;re having brunch at your favorite bistro this holiday weekend, you&apos;ll likely notice that the Eggs Benedict and Eggs Oscar that normally adorn other diners&apos; tables are conspicuously absent. So what&apos;s an egg-loving consumer - or restaurateur - to do? The answer might be closer than you think: local organic farms.

            USA - People look to healthy eating
          </title>
          <description>
            Eating healthy is a goal for most people, but often times a difficult one to regularly achieve. Work and family responsibilities often make time scarce, and it is easier to go out to restaurants or prepare ready-made meals at home. The recent recession also prompted many to search for value, and sometimes healthy options such as organic produce and other environmental considerations took a back seat as they are oftentimes considered more expensive than “standard” products.

            USA - The pork market
          </title>
          <description>
            While pork processors are struggling with lower trending carcass value, they&apos;re also having moderate success in lowering the cost of live inventory. Indeed, hog buyers will try bidding lower in the country once again Thursday morning. Movement has been rather slow through the first half of the week, so packers may be cautious in cutting off seller interest even more. Lean contracts should start out narrowly mixed thanks to a slow combination of follow-through selling and short-covering.
