About the Book

Bill Hayes, the "elder statesman" of the meat industry, spent the first twenty three years of his life in the village of Exbourne near Okehampton in Devon. He played Rugby Union for North Tawton and Okehampton and was well known in the local farming community.

Having spent many years in Australia, he returned to Europe and took a year out in Paris, France where he wrote this book.

This book must be read by anyone to whom drink has cost more than money.

It tells how a country boy went to hell and back before he broke free of the chains of alcohol; how the ghosts of the past have remained to haunt him for over thirty years.

This intimate portrait from a troubled boyhood to a successful businessman who was constantly haunted by guilt of his past and fear of the future.

Above all it reveals how the man takes the drink, then the drink takes the drink and finally the drink takes the man.
