EU - 250 years of vets

29 Jan 2011

European health and consumer directorate DG SANCO and the World Organisation for Animal Health have organised a series of events to celebrate the 250th birthday of the veterinary profession.

The aim is to highlight the varied roles tackled by the modern vet and the first step has been the production of six videos, which you can watch here. The ‘Vets in Your Daily Life’ shorts focus on six major themes - animal husbandry, pets, crisis management, food security, food safety and zoonoses.

A range of national and European events will be running as part of World Veterinary Year 2011. The opening ceremony will take place on the January 24 in Versailles, the country where the profession was born. The world’s first veterinary school was founded in Lyon, France, in 1761, under the guidance of French veterinarian Claude Bourgelat.
