Ireland - The sheep and lamb market

The mart trade for sheep and especially lambs was much improved around the country during the past week with prices improved by up to €3/hd to a range of €46-60 over the weight in the main.
 
 
 

Heavy cull ewes were making up to €110. Ewe hoggets sold to €155, while the top reported for breeding ewes was €160. Store lambs ranged from €50 to €85/hd.

Trade was good at the marts held yesterday. Kilkenny Mart reported prices up by €1-2/hd, with the butcher and factory lambs selling for €53-62 over their weight.

A big sale at Fermoy Mart saw some great prices of up to €69 over. The general run sold for €51-61 with the weight. The 45-50kg lambs were making from €50 to €59 over the €1/kg in Athenry.
 
Lighter types were selling for €36-52 over.

Butcher lambs down in Enniscorthy sold for €96-105/hd or €48-60 over the weight. While the factory lots made €47-55 over. Ewe lambs ranged from €100 to €115.
 
Prices for stores ranged from €70 to €82/hd. Fat cull ewes made from €85 to €100, with lighter lots making from €40 to €75 each.

Mayo/Sligo Mart enjoyed a good improvement to the finished lamb prices from the previous week with a better demand for stores as well.
 
The heavier types sold for €48-56 over the €1/kg, with the lighter types making from €45 to €75. Cull ewes ranged from €62 to €117.

Fat lambs were better by €1-3/hd at Baltinglass Mart and sold from €95 to €105. The 40-45kg lambs made €85-95. Ewe lambs made from €90 to €115 each. Prices for cull ewes ranged from €50 to €90, while breeding ewes made €100-150.

Dowra Mart had a big sale of sheep last Saturday with greater numbers of store lambs starting to appear. Trade was steady for all lots.
 
The best of the store lambs made from €70 to €85 each, while the mountain stores sold for €45-70. Good ewe hoggets were making from €130 to €155 each, while the cull ewes made from €50 to €90.

Carnew Mart had 2,200 sheep on offer with a big improvement in prices. Butcher and factory lots were improved by €5-7 selling from €95 to €108 or €53-63 over.

Stores were making from €62 to €82 or €35-48 over. Cull ewes sold from €55 to €110. Prices for breeding ewes varied from €105 to €147.

A larger number of sheep on offer at Mountbellew Mart met with an excellent trade. With a huge number of old ewes on offer, trade was easier than the previous week, with most of them selling from €60 to €98.
 
Young breeding ewes were in keen demand and made up to €160.

Limited supplies of ewe hoggets peaked at €150. Ewes with lambs at foot made up to €212. Lambs between 40-50kgs generally traded at €46-57 over their weight. Store prices ran from €70 to €94.
