For the fourth edition of Annapoorna - World of food India, the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), along with 11 companies, will hold "South African" stand in Hall 5 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.

The stand will feature an array of South African products, producers and trade bodies eager to network and form mutually profitable partnerships in India.

Berfin (Pte) Ltd, Econocom Foods, Fresh Produce Exporters` Forum, Cloof Wine Estate, Lakeland Food Company, Mcnab's Energy Tabs, Ridder's Creek, Rightside Marketing, Smitex and South Africa Fruit and Vegetable Cannes` Export Council are likely to exhibit in the South African pavilion.

The food industry in South Africa is partly a reflection of the country's major agricultural activities and partly a reflection of the existence of sophisticated food manufacturing companies. However, if the liquor industry is included - the sector grows substantially with a company like South African Breweries (beer manufacturers) being the 4th largest brewing company in the world.

According to South Africa-based Lake Land Food Company, India is one of South Africa's biggest trading partners, the product range which will be displayed at SA Pavilion is ideally suited for export into the Indian market.

The company is planning to display a range of fruit preparations, syrups for dairy (yoghurt, drink yoghurt and soft cheese), bakery & desserts, ice cream and internationally patented range of unique 3d teaspoon shape biscuits.

"With our participation in Annapoorna - we except about 50 visitors a day to our stand and also seek agents or companies who can export directly form South Africa," the company informed F&B News via e-mail.

Today, South Africa delivers in a number of sub-sectors under agro-processing, namely indigenous teas (rooibos and honeybush teas), aquaculture, floriculture, wines, fresh and canned fruits and vegetables, nuts, sugar, meat (ostrich, beef, pork, poultry, mutton, goat, game and crocodile), diary, grains and cereals. South African wines, fruits (citrus, avocados and grapes), and sugar have exceptional unique and premium qualities that place them on the global demand.

Aseptic packed and bottled fruit juices are found world-wide and processed meats are an important part of South Africa's economy. Dairy products, although not attaining the status of the New Zealand industry are also important.

Further, the country is working on innovations to add more value added products such as avocado oil. In the processed food categories there is significant growth in terms of sauces and spices. Currently South Africa's Abalone is ranked amongst the world's best products.

Alanie van Heerden of McNab's Energy Tabs, says, "Indian food & beverage market has great potential which we are excited to tap. We are sure that South African brands and products will be successful in drawing the attention of the visitors. We will also try to meet potential Indian partners, manufacturers and distributors."
