Australia - Hereford bull sale

25 Sep 2012

A LARGE buying gallery from across eastern Australia turned-out for the Cootharaba Beef Genes Hereford Bull Sale last Wednesday.

More than half of the buying gallery were prospective purchasers from New South Wales and Victoria, but the topped priced bull of the sale was sold to local commercial cattle breeders Des and Dorothea Warrian, Autumn Vale, Injune.

The Warrian family have been repeat buyers at Ian and Anne Galloway’s Cootharaba Hereford Bull Sale for more than 10 years.

“I can always rely on buying very good quality Hereford genetics at this bull sale,” Mr Warrian said.
The topped priced bull was Cootharaba Radford (P) and sold to $8500.

The bull was sired by Keswick Sundance Z233 (P) and weighted 964kg at 26-months-old and returned an Eye Muscle Area (EMA) of 127cm sq plus scanned 12mm of fat on the rump and 8mm on the rib.

Radford will go to work in the Warrian family’s pure bred Hereford cow herd in which they run around 450 head of breeder cows, and turn-off up to 600 head (some extra cattle are bought in during the year) of 15-month-old 300 to 360kg feeder weight cattle into a feedlot destined for feed-on to the domestic supermarket trade.

The second top priced bull of the sale was Cootharaba Robinson and sold to David Phelan, Yarram, Victoria for $7000.

The bull was sired by Charvel Benefit and weighted 964kg at 31-months-old with an EMA of 121cm sq plus a scan of 15mm of fat of the rump and 9mm of fat on the rib.

A third top price of $6500 was achieved twice during the sale.

The first bull to reach $6500 was Cootharaba Richardson who also had the same sire as the top priced bull and was purchased by Alan McMahon from Kyogle in New South Wales.

The bull weighed 888kg at 23-months-old and scanned an EMA of 120cm sq with 18mm of fat on the rump and 11mm of fat on the rib area.

The second bull to top $6500 was Cootharaba Simpson who was sired by Cootharaba Glen Bogie and was bought by the Shannon family from Merritts Creek in Queensland.

The young 16-month-old bull weighed 640kg with an EMA of 104cm sq and 18mm of fat on the rump and 12mm of fat on the rib area.

Overall, the sale grossed $195,000 for 52 bulls offered and 47 bulls sold in the sale ring. An average price of $4148 was recorded for the sale. A 90 percent clearance rate was achieved.
