USA - Big boost for poultry plant

22 Oct 2012

Image provided by Prime Equipment Group The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has come through with a $1.45 million grant to support infrastructure and site preparation for a new poultry processing plant in Franklin Township, N.J.

The planned Route 40 business park is on the 73-acre site of the former Meredith Farms plant and is expected to create about 200 jobs. Work on the project is scheduled to begin in early 2013.

The township took possession of the property three years ago and plans to match the federal grant to demolish existing facilities and build new roads.

The EDA originally announced plans to provide the grant in March with the aim of supporting regional agriculture and food processing operations.

Meredith Farms filed for bankruptcy in 1999 after an estimated 50 tons of rotting chick corpses were found in the abandoned, 100,000-sq.-ft. plant.
