Australia - Santa Gertrudis sale

28 Oct 2012

THERE wasn't a dull moment at the Barcoo Santa Breeders Sale on Tuesday at the Blackall Saleyards, as buyers frantically bidded to secure either a Drensmaine or Forest Park bull.

And buyers were prepared to pay for quality, as potential stud sires and commercial bulls continued to enter the ring. Alec Walker, Gillespie Grazing Co, Blackall, bought both the top and second top-priced bulls from Len and Helen Sargood, Drensmaine Santas, Tambo.

He paid $34,000 for the polled Drensmaine Yoga sire, by Yarrawonga Singleton (P). A younger bull at 20 months of age, Yoga displayed an impressive EMA of 121sq cm.

With a weight of 814kg, he had an average daily gain of 1.34kg, as well as a scrotal circumference of 40cm and an IMF percentage of 4 to back him.

Moments before, Mr Walker was the successful bidder at $20,000 for another polled bull in Drensmaine Yaraka.

By the Strathmore Yogi (P) sire, Yaraka weighed 850kg to give him an ADG of 1.2kg. He had a scrotal circumference of 42.5cm, an EMA of 128sq cm and an IMF percentage of 3.8.

Mr Walker said the $34,000 Yoga bull would be used as a heifer bull in their stud operation.

"The other bull (Drensmaine Yaraka) will probably go with the stud cows. I think he's got a lot of growth potential," Mr Walker said.

Gillespie Grazing Co runs about 160 stud breeders and 3000 commercial females in the Blackall district.

Andrew and Kate Chapman, Rowanlea Cattle Co, Calliope, in partnership with Colin and Glenda Semple, Calool, Banana, purchased Drensmaine Yogi for $18,000.

The Strathmore Yogi (P) son had an EMA of 126sq cm and a scrotal circumference of 39.5cm at just 23 months.

He weighed 862kg to give him an ADG of 1.19kg, and scanned 12 and 7mm at the P8 and rib fat sites.

After a successful sale on Monday, the Russell family, Swan Hill Cattle Co, Blackall, showed support to fellow breeders by purchasing Drensmaine Yankee for $16,000 and Drensmaine Yobbo (P) for $15,000.

The 24-month-old Yankee bull had an impressive EMA of 136sq cm, a scrotal measurement of 42.5cm and an IMF percentage of 5.1. He scanned 9/7mm, weighed 898kg and had an ADG of 1.20kg.

Sir William Allen and family, Forest Park, Alice Downs, Blackall, sold Forest Park Embargo for $8000 to Camberwarra Cattle Co, Corfield.

Embargo weighed 812kg at 24 months, posting an ADG of 1.04kg.

Other figures included an EMA of 137sq cm, a scrotal circumference of 35cm and an IMF percentage of 3.8.

Camberwarra Cattle Co also purchased Forest Park Earl, by the Strathmore Z98 sire, for $7500.
Teevee Santas, Myrtle Park, Comet, snapped up a poll scurred sire in Forest Park Enterprise for $7500.

With Forest Park bloodlines on both the sire and dam side, Enterprise weighed 768kg and had an ADG of 1kg.

The 24-month-old had an EMA of 122sq cm, a scrotal measurement of 39.5cm and an IMF percentage of 4.8.

Twin Hills Cattle Co, Old Twin Hills Station, Clermont, put the largest draft of six bulls together, to average $5000.

They paid a top of $6000 twice, for Forest Park Epilogue (P) and Forest Park Easel. Other volume buyers included Walker and Co, Tulmur, Winton, who purchased five bulls for a $4400 average.
GP Cattle Co, Portland Downs, Ilfracombe, also took home five, averaging $6200.
