THE Victorian Farmers Federation has written to every Victorian-based federal politician from Labor and the Greens, urging them to back the live animal export trade.
Forcing Australia out of the trade would be counter-productive, cut off an important source of protein for importing nations and undermine attempts to improve animal welfare standards in developing nations, VFF president Peter Tuohey said in the letter sent last week.
''Australia remains the only country in the world investing in animal welfare beyond its borders for livestock exports,'' he wrote.
''Australia is applying some of the most stringent animal welfare standards in the world … And we are going one step further by trying to educate and accredit the abattoirs that process Australian livestock.''
Mr Tuohey told The Age the federation did not want the live sheep export trade shut down in the same way the cattle trade to Indonesia was suspended.
