Romania - Foreign farm investment

22 Mar 2010

The minister of agriculture of Republic of Moldova Valeriu Cosarciuc announced plans to help Romanian investors put their money into local investment projects, particularly in processing plants (for milk and meat processing). This is part of a broader improvement in the cooperation between the countries after the communists lost the power in Chisinau. The legislation would be adjusted such as to allow foreigners buy farming land, he announced. Cosarciuc announced active measures including meetings with private investors in Romania in this regard. Currently the price of farming land in Moldova is around USD 1,000 per ha – which is below the price in any region of Romania. The farming land in Moldova is privately owned, but the plots are (just like in Romania) of small size: mostly below 10 ha per piece, while farms lease some 50ha.
