A major meat producer is considering an expansion in Allegan County that could lead to 97 new jobs over the next two to three years, the Gun Plain Township supervisor told 24 Hour News 8 on Monday.
JBS Plainwell, Inc. is looking at building a $43 million freezer project for the plant and undertake a $20 million expansion of the existing meat production facility, supervisor Mike VanDenBerg said.
"It'd be a big boost for us," he said. "We're an ag[ricultural] community. This would create a lot of demand for beef."
That would help farmers in the township, located near Plainwell, VanDenBerg said.
A call left Monday with JBS Plainwell's parent company has not yet been returned.
Michigan is competing with Utah for the expansion, the township supervisor said, and the state has put together an incentives package for JBS. The township would consider incentives of its own, he said.
