Huron has agreed to accept waste known as paunch from the Northern Beef Packers plant in Aberdeen, according to The Plainsman of Huron.
The city of Huron will be paid $32.50 per ton or a total of $24,183 plus $1,368 tax. In the initial contract, the disposal will run for a total of six months with 27 tons per week.
Paunch is undigested food in the belly of animals when they're slaughtered.
Northern Beef Packers had asked the Brown County Landfill to accept paunch and manure, but Brown County sent a letter to asking the beef plant to explore options.
Commissioners and residents have concerns about the smell of the waste and the amount of room it could take at the landfill, county commissioners said.
The paunch will be included in Huron's composting process, according to The Plainsman...
