Image provided by Hennessy Grading Systems Big Sky Farms, the second-largest hog producer in Canada, has entered into receivership as high costs of feed have taken their toll, according to a report by Reuters.

Based in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Big Sky is responsible for 40 percent of Saskatchewan's total hog production.

Reuters quotes industry sources as saying that Big Sky does not plan layoffs or cutbacks in production. In other media reports, Casey Smit, CEO of Big Sky is quoted as saying the company was losing C$40 to C$50 per head.

Big Sky is a supplier to Maple Leaf Foods and Olymel, among others.
