The new Beef from Dairy village will include live cattle demos, technical talks from Bord Bia, Pfizer Animal Health, Teagasc and trade experts etc. Two major beef processors-Dunbia Ireland and Slaney Foods International (part of Linden Group) are supporting this initiative.
Farmers will have the opportunity to meet representatives from beef breed societies and look at under 16 month Friesian bulls- almost ready for slaughter, spring born 2011 Friesian steers that can be finished by spring 2013.
Other stock on display will include Hereford x Friesian Heifers born spring 2011, Angus x Friesian Steers born spring 2011 etc. So a great opportunity for dairy farmers to discuss with the experts what beef breeds they could consider using.
According to show coordinator Richard Whelan “we have strong support from all the major beef breed societies and as we await the abolition of milk quotas there many opportunities to develop a profitable cattle enterprise (contract calf rearing, calf to beef, cull cows etc) on dairy farms.
Also new is an international dairy conference sponsored by Alltech who have their European HQ at Dunboyne. Cathal McCormack, Country Manager for Alltech says that “this conference is of great interest to all milk producers”. Speakers include Jim Bergin, CEO of, Glanbia Dairy Ingredients Ireland, Dr. Donagh Berry, Teagasc, Patrick O'Meara, AIB, Kevin Tuck, Alltech and Dr. Edmond Harty, Dairymaster.
Karen McBride (from a farming family in N. Ireland) now with Wondermilk, Beijing will talk on milk prospects in China. Other speakers include Nigel Lok, a milk producer (new entrant) from South Africa and Cord Hoeltje, General Manager, Herdbook Association of Saxony, Germany.
