17 Nov 2009

Portuguese retail group Jeronimo Martins is planning to enter a new Eastern European market by 2012 and considering Russia, Ukraine or Romania as the possible variants of its expansion, according to the Portuguese media citing the company’s CEO Louis Paglia.

The company uses the format of its Polish discounter chain Biedronka, in order to expand in another country not far from Poland, according to Paglia. Currently Biedronka is one of the largest food retailers in Poland.

"We definitely look forward to growth in new geographic locations, considering major countries in Central and Eastern Europe ", - said Mr. Paglia mentioning Ukraine, Romania and Russia.

"Turkey is another country that we would be interested in, however we have not considered it yet" - he said.

The Portuguese company is planning to start the expansion during the next three years.
