Australia - Japanese beef trade slower

20 Oct 2012

With the weather in Japan finally showing signs of autumn, the Japanese trade in the wholesale market this week noted on improving interest on sliced beef items for hot pot dishes.

Yet, overall demand for beef was still soft, with end-users being particularly cautious.

News on the record monthly shipment of Australian beef to China in September caught attention of some businesses in Japan, as they closely monitor price movements for popular items such as 65CL and briskets.

In the foodservice market this week, gyudon (beef rice bowl) giant Zensho announced its expansion to the retail sector, via acquisition of Maruya supermarket chain.

The retailer was quoted in Chikusan Nippo that they hope to re-enforce its procurement of imported beef, and improve business overall.
