Russia - European supermarket expands investment

 German Metro Cash & Carry is planning to start the development of mini hypermarkets format in Russia during the next several years, according to Metro Cash & Carry Russia CEO Akin Bayer.

"These stores will de developed in a small wholesale format, with the total area size no more than 3-3,5 thousand square meters," - he explained.

The size of a trading area of the traditional shopping centers Metro Cash & Carry is 7,5-9,5 thousand square meters.

"We  are planning to start the developing of a new format during the next two years", - Bayer added. He noted that the first small shopping centers of the company will be launched in Moscow.

Metro has already launched the new format in Germany. Last year the company opened three such hypermarkets in its homeland.

The new format stores will be primarily focused on the HoReCa segment and traders. Bayer explained that the development of a new format will help Metro to work more closely with small retail business.

This year, Metro Cash & Carry has already launched in Russia a project called "School of Trade", where it helps to modernize small grocery stores. In the coming year the company intends to modernize 50 of such trading sites.
