Ireland - Big money for Hereford cattle

07 Sep 2012

The sale of the entire yearling heifer section of Tom Brennan's Balleen Hereford herd at Freshford, Co Kilkenny, attracted wide interest from across the country with buyers from both North and South competing for stock.

The herd has forged a strong reputation nationally, winning championships at Kilkenny and Tullamore and often making top prices at society sales.

In its 80-year existence only a handful of heifers have been offered for sale from the herd for breeding.

The Brennans expressed satisfaction with the overall average of €2,910.

There was also good clearance of bulls and increased prices for dropped calves.

Demand for Hereford-cross dams to improve milk and fertility within the beef herd, along with increased awareness of the eating quality of the marbled meat associated with the breed are major factors in driving the current demand.
