Australia - Abattoir problems at Gingin

18 Aug 2012

The issues facing Jack Burton over the Gingin abattoir could also put plans to build a northern abattoir in jeopardy.

Mr Burton said his investment partners were now reconsidering their position and work on the project had been delayed.

"Because these guys (investors) have got a serious issue in terms of how hard it has been to reopen an existing abattoir then they are thinking it must be impossible to start a new one," he said.

Mr Burton already has his pilot abattoir operating outside of Derby which is processing about six beasts a day, but the bigger abattoir was planned to open outside of Broome.

"They (investors) are starting to ask us questions as to whether the State and Federal Governments are even interested in the opening of a new abattoir," he said.

"Because of the hardships which we are going through with Gingin, they are just concerned about how hard it will be to open a completely new facility."
