USA - Cattle herd needs building up

12 Oct 2012

U.S. beef cow numbers are the lowest they have been in more than five-decades while beef prices are at historical highs. Still - demand is strong - but the recent drought has impacted the cost of feed for beef producers.

Ohio State University's Stan Smith still says it's time to build the herd.

He says feed alternatives could be a great way for beef producers to survive. This includes grazing management - leaving some residual and not letting the cows graze it too close.

Also - considering how alternative feeds might replace the traditional forages producers prefer - such as distiller grains, gluten and more. The third possibility is to grow alternative annual or bi-annual forages on acres available from July through the fall.
