Scotland - Real Aberdeen Angus beef

20 Sep 2012

SHOPPERS BUYING Aberdeen-Angus beef will soon be offered the ultimate in traceability – DNA-based assurance that the meat on offer is indeed from a certified Angus beast.

The A-A Cattle Society this week announced its partnership with IdentiGEN, a leading provider of DNA-based verification systems, as part of its drive to establish Certified A-A Beef as Britain and Ireland's top beef brand.

Under this new collaboration, IdentiGEN will generate a DNA databank of animals eligible to enter the CAAB programme, facilitating routine monitoring of its beef to confirm its breed origin, and underpinning initiatives aimed at improving eating quality.

Society chief executive Ron McHattie said: "Aberdeen-Angus is the fastest-growing breed of beef cattle in the world and it is absolutely crucial that we protect the integrity and develop the quality of the A-A brand.

"This new technology provides us with the tool to ramp up our due diligence, move our processes to a different level, further protecting the integrity of Aberdeen-Angus and, at the same time, giving us a competitive edge in the marketplace."

IdentiGEN co-founder Dr Ronan Loftus, said the new partnership would create "a new quality benchmark for the British meat industry".

"Consumers are increasingly savvy and want to know where the food they buy and eat comes from – this new partnership ensures 100% traceability for all beef carrying the Certified Aberdeen-Angus Beef label," he said.
