Australia - Dairy cows getting more expensive
12 May 2010

The price of dairy cows is rising as farmers seek cattle to increase their herds.
Some in the industry are saying this shows signs that the industry is recovering from the tough times of last year, when milk prices were slashed
Dairy cow trader Gerald Delaney, from Landmark, says recent sales are very seasonal based
"In the autumn, we are looking for autumn calvers," he says.
"Now, as we move into the winter period, people are looking for cattle right on the job of calving, so they are not having to hang on them for indefinite periods before they've got some cashflow coming in.
"Even more recently, we've been noticing that people are trying to read the play, even trying to secure spring calving heifers through fear of lack of supply."
