Australia - Organic food gains market share

21 Mar 2010

Organic food is gradually becoming established within the diet of Australian households, according to the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA).
Despite a slow growth rate in the UK, which has led to speculation that organic is considered ‘high-brow’, an independent research commissioned by BFA in 2009 showed the consumption of organic food in Australia is being bought by a range of people.

“30% of organic consumers have an income below $40,000 demonstrating that organic is not adopted by only higher socio-economic groups,” BFA director, Andrew Monk said.

“Over half of Australian shoppers - six in every ten - now buy organic at least occasionally, and the availability of organic produce in a diverse range of retail outlets has grown.”
