Kenya - Uchumi supermarkets out of receivership

10 Feb 2010

The supermarket which has branches throughout the country was placed under government control in July 2007 after running bankrupt.
The supermarket can now float its shares for trade at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
The end of receivership coincided with the close of one of their promotions dubbed ‘Heri Njema na Uchumi Christmas Promotion'.
Ten people emerged winners in the promotion whereby the grand winner walked away with a new Isuzu D-max.
The new Isuzu D-max was won by 23-year-old mother of two and a gospel singer, Esther Wabare.
The remaining winners walked away with gift vouchers worth Sh.3, 000 per month for the whole year to shop in Uchumi branches of their own choice. Over 2.5 million people participated in the promotion.
"There will be new branches opening soon in Nakuru, Embu and also one in Kericho that will be opened by the end of the week," said Jonathan Ciano Chief Executive Officer.
Ciano said the promotion was run fairly and the winner was picked by a shopper who was chosen randomly and then blindfolded.
Another competition has been scheduled to start from November this year to run through Christmas season
