A review panel is being assembled in the coming weeks to evaluate mechanical grading machines at beef factories and will be due to report findings by early 2013.
Mechanical grading replaced visual assessment of carcassses for beef classification at the factories eight years ago.
Assessment is now on a possible 225 grades for the Quality Payment System (QPS) introduced in December 2009.
The panel, which is expected to be made up of various parties, will be required to evaluate the system, including the calibration of the machines, to cope with changing trends in quality beef production.
