All-American products that went down a real treat on a holiday in the US have inspired an Alnwick butcher to introduce them in his shop – with a best of British slant.
R Turnbull & Sons Butchers in Market Street has launched a new range of takeaway sandwiches based on BBQ pulled pork and the ever-popular hot dog.
Shop owner Mark Turnbull explained: “I came accross ‘Pulled’ Pork sandwiches a number of years ago while holidaying in Florida, and have watched their popularity grow. It’s absolutely massive over there.
“The pork is cooked using a low-heat, long-cook process. With these extended times at low temperatures, the meat becomes so tender that it can be ‘pulled’ apart or easily broken into individual pieces – hence the name.
“We’ve also decided to give the traditional hot dog a British-style makeover after developing a pork and beef sausage using local meats. By combining these meats with a unique blend of spices, we have created a top-notch banger with a very high meat content.”
Turnbull’s customers can choose from a plain hot dog with a choice of mustard and ketchup or a second variety, The ‘Chilli Dog’, where hot is very much the operative word, as it features a beef chilli sauce developed by Turnbull’s team of in-house chefs.
Through the initiative, Turnbull’s is strengthening an existing supply partnership with local bakers, The Farm Bakery in Rennington. The two businesses have together developed special buns and baps for Turnbull’s new ready-to-go sandwiches, which are now being sold over the hot counter, Thursday thru Saturday.
“Here at Turnbull’s we’re always keen to develop new products and recipes and have enjoyed the challenge of giving these traditional American dishes a true British theme to further inspire our customers,” explained Mark. Full details are available in the shop.
