Scotland - Prince Charles to visit the Highlands

15 Aug 2010

The Prince of Wales is due to visit the north Highlands to find out about the progress of a scheme to help the area's economy.

Prince Charles, known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, launched the North Highland Initiative (NHI) in August 2005 to promote and develop the economy and to support rural communities in the region.

The NHI brings together the farming community, local businesses and the tourism industry to try to address some of the challenges facing rural communities in the far north of Scotland.
A royal spokesman said the Prince was "passionate about the area".

He will meet representatives from different bodies promoting the area, including North Highland Tourism and North Highland Products, at the Storehouse of Foulis in Evanton, Ross-shire.

He will also visit a small farmers' market and sample local cheeses, biscuits, meat and vegetables.
David Whiteford, chairman of the NHI said: "It is an honour to welcome the Duke back to the north Highlands to recognise the hard work of the local community.

"Local businesses and producers do face challenges due to our remote and fragile location, but the NHI has been instrumental in boosting the local economy and gaining recognition for our produce across the UK."
