Farmers in Donegal are being asked to be extra vigilant of sheep rustling activity which is being carried by an organised and well-informed gang of criminals.
Two farmers located in the Inishowen region became the latest victims of sheep theft last week after a total of 78 sheep were stolen from two fields.
Eamon Lynch said that 28 of the best slaughter lambs from his Texel flock were missing last Friday morning.
The nature of the theft left evidence that the gang were no strangers to the area.
"I found tyre tracks at the field entrance and there are also signs that a dog had been used to separate 20 cows from the flock and move them into the field next door.
"A pallet was found at the gable end of an old house which was obviously used as a race to load the lambs into a trailer," Eamon said.
Stolen
He added that a neighbour who lives only a half mile from him had a further 50 lambs stolen on the same night.
"We have never had any problem like this in such a quiet rural area before and it's not right to see this activity continue to an industry worth so much to the region," concluded Eamon.
Gardaí are investigating the thefts.
