Australia - News for pig farmers "there is no global bacon shortage"
12 Oct 2012
Australian pig farmers say a world shortage of bacon could be good for the
local industry.
The National Pig Association of Britain says rising feed prices across the
globe mean a bacon and pork shortage is unavoidable.
But in Australia three quarters of the bacon consumed is imported and
farmers are hoping a price rise for pig meat will make them competitive on world
markets.
Northern Victorian pig farmer John Bourke says he's not a believer in the
bacon shortage, but he does hope it happens.
"We've been strangled by the imports and lack of market share to grow our
industry," he said.
"We've got the capability to grow our market but we need support.
"It's a great opportunity to show when there is a country with short supply
it would have to be cheaper to use local product than import it."
