The Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation of Japan (ALIC) have released survey outcomes on beef cattle farms, with specific focus on larger scale operations (with cattle numbers greater than 200 head) during the during the Japanese financial year 2011 (JFY – April 2011 to March 2012).
Farms with over 200 head, on average sold Japanese Black Wagyu cattle to slaughter at around 30 months of age, at an average of 764,260 yen (A$9,266) during the JFY 2011, according to the ALIC report.
The average price of the cattle sold by smaller operations (less than 200 head) was lower, at 746,082 yen (A$9,046).
The higher value of cattle from larger farms may have been assisted by brands commercially developed by the producers.
The profit margin of larger farms was also greater at 7.4%, compared to 2.6% for smaller operations.
There were 69,600 beef cattle farms in Japan as at February 2011 (down 6.5% from the previous year), with 87% of the total operating with less than 50 head.
The reminder (13%) ran 76% of total beef cattle herd in Japan, which was 2,7 million head.
