A date of Saturday, 25 August, has been set for this year's Sheep Ireland ram sale.
The sale returns following last year's special ram sale held in Kilkenny Mart. Flockowners will be able to purchase elite recorded rams from all the main breeds with €uro-Star indices available for all animals.
€uro-Star indices rank rams on a star system from one to five stars, with five-star rams, on average, expected to deliver a significant boost in performance over the one-star rams.
Analysis of ram performance in the MALP and CPT flocks from 2009 to 2011 has proven this statement.
Lambs sired by five-star rams weighed, on average, 2.4kg heavier at weaning than lambs sired by one-star rams (30.9kg versus 28.5kg).
This is a significant difference and delivers marked advantages in reducing the period to slaughter.
A catalogue will be available for viewing before the sale on www.sheep.ie
