Australia - More beef for Taiwan

04 Oct 2012

Taiwan imported 87,471 tonnes swt of beef during 2011-12, an increase of 3% on the previous year and 20% above the five-year average (Directorate General of Customs).

Australia remained as the largest beef supplier to Taiwan in 2011-12, with imports for the year totalling 38,185 tonnes swt - up 21% year-on-year. Underpinning the increase was stronger demand for Australian chilled beef – with imports almost doubling compared to 2010-11, at 6,715 tonnes swt. The increase for the past year took Australia’s imported market share in Taiwan from 37% in 2010-11, to 44% in 2011-12.

Taiwanese imports of US beef for 2011-12 declined 26% year-on-year, to 21,949 tonnes swt – largely due to restrictions placed upon US beef by Taiwanese authorities.

Following Australia and the US, New Zealand was the third largest beef supplier to Taiwan during the past fiscal year, totalling 20,935 tonnes swt (up 20% year-on-year).
