Australia - Hereford cattle in the Far North
15 Jul 2012
WHITEFACE cattle are not the breed many southerners would associate with the Red Centre, yet as the Northern Hereford Advantage liftout in this week’s The Land discovers, they thrive in the volatile climate.
Ben and Nicole Hayes and their children Nikita, Mikala, Shannan, Tahnee and Jamie, have run a pure commercial Poll Hereford herd on the historic 144,000-hectare Undoolya Station at Alice Springs for decades.
Growing Centralian beef has been challenging at times - in particular managing the drought years of the past decade and also the options for marketing beef.
The Hayes’ story is just one of a number in Northern Hereford Advantage that examines the benefits of whiteface cattle in pure and crossbred situations.
Herefords are also making a mark in restaurants as a branded product and the breed is firing on all cylinders across the globe.
