A FAMILY-run meat business has won a tourism award.
Moostone Meats Farm Shop, in Wembury, has won two Gold Devon Tourism Product Awards, for its Red Ruby Beef rump steak and Coarse Farmhouse pork chipolatas.
AWARD: Tim and Charlotte Jakins, owners of Moostone Meats Farm Shop
The firm, run by Tim and Charlotte Jakins, specialises in providing quality meats to restaurants and pubs in Plymouth and the South Hams, such as Sparkwell's Treby Arms, Jolly Jacks at Mayflower Marina, and Otter Nurseries, in Ottery St Mary.
The double award caps a successful year which has also seen the venture pick up the overall Taste of The West Produce Award – for its Red Ruby Beef Burgers, Lamb Rump Roast and Rib Eye Steak – and win bronze in the Taste of the West Retail Outlet Award.
Mr and Mrs Jakins have farmed for 15 years at their 500-acre National Trust-owned New Barton Farm.
They specialise in hardy native breeds, in particular Red Ruby Beef, which thrive on the rich grassland of the South Hams.
After completing his education the couple's son, James, hopes to join the family business on a full-time basis. The business overlooks the Mewstone, hence the name Moostone Meats.
