Egypt - More canned food

02 Nov 2010

EGYPT will aim to increase output of canned fruit and vegetables in the coming years in an effort to curb dramatic price hikes in the local market, according to a government official.

Othman Mohamed Othman, the African country's minister of economic development, called for an expansion of canned fruit and vegetable production in order to offset declining fresh produce output. He said agricultural production was down 3% this year, compared with the previous 12 months, although he described the slump as "temporary".
