Australia - Great feed makes great cattle
04 Feb 2012
Cooler conditions over summer have resulted in good pasture growth around south eastern
Australia.
It's meant that cattle is heavier than what is usually expected for this time of year.
Livestock agent Stewart Smith says it's beginning to dry off around the region.
He's hoping autumn temperatures will kick in soon to encourage stronger growth.
"Normally when you do get summer rain you get a great bulk which doesn't mean great quality feed, so if you do get rain in the cooler months you certainly grow more quality," he says.
"That's been evident in the weight of our cattle coming through our prime sales the last month.
"The top end of our vealers have almost been weighing 400 kilos and certainly we haven't seen the weight in those calves this time of year for a long, long time."
