Turkey looks to Europe as beef price hits €8/kg
Turkey is now looking to the EU as a possible source of fresh beef amid tight domestic supplies and soaring prices.
On the domestic market, the deadweight price in Turkey has increased to the equivalent of €8/kg, with live cattle trading at the equivalent of €4/kg. Traditionally, steep taxes excluded importing countries from cashing in on the strong market. However, in mid-September, the Turkish government moved to ease market conditions by slashing import taxes. In the case of fresh beef, taxes were reduced from 225% to 30% with the tax on cattle imported live slashed from 135% to 30%. The duty on live lamb less than one year old was reduced from 135% to just 20%.
