Puerto Rico - Cattle shortage

According to ElNuevoDia.com, the Puerto Rican meat industry is in crisis, farmers and processors are in disagreement, and the local Department of Agriculture (DA) has made minimal efforts to improve the situation. Local meat processors warn that all this could bring an end to the local industry.

Porto Rico - Cargill teams up with Corporacion Pipasa

Cargill in Central America announced that it has combined its operations with Corporacion Pipasa, which is a leading poultry and meat processor in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is now a part of Cargill. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. All regulatory approvals have been completed. Pipasa produces beef, pork, chicken and turkey products in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The company has five processing plants, four animal feed facilities and 12 distribution centers. Pipasa also is a leader in the region in feed for cattle, aquaculture, poultry, pork, horses and household pets. Its key brands are Pipasa for poultry, Tiquicia for cold cuts, and As Can for pet food.

Puerto Rico - Meat inspection scandal

A Puerto Rican businessman has been indicted on violations of the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Acts after he allegedly sold spoiled meat to processors, retailers and restaurants, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico announced today.
