Pork production grew by 2.3 per cent over the same period last year as a result of an 11.3 per cent increase in average carcass weight. The number of slaughtered pigs, however, dropped by more than eight per cent, reports TimesofMalta.com. Total meat production and producer value grew, the National Statistics Office added. Total meat production (excluding rabbits) increased by 0.4 per cent when compared to the same quarter in 2009.

In December 2009, the pig population amounted to 65,918 heads, an increase of 0.6 per cent, or 407 pigs over 2008. Whereas the stock of piglets decreased by 8.1 per cent, stocks of young and fattening pigs increased by 10.3 and 1.0 per cent respectively. Breeding stock, consisting mainly of breeding sows, registered a decrease of 1.9 per cent when compared to 2008.
