Chile’s investments abroad amount to 54 billion USD, mostly Latinamerica
Chile's investment abroad amounted to about 54.2 billion US dollars between 1990 and June 2010, distributed among more than 70 countries from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Europe, according to a report released Monday by the General Directorate of International Economic Relations (DIRECON).
Argentina accounted for 29.5% of the investment, Brazil 19.6% and Colombia 12.5%.

Chilean fruit industry compensates smaller shipments with higher global prices
sharp declines in the volume of exported fruits during the 2009-2010 season Chile’s fruit industry managed to offset those losses because of higher prices paid in foreign markets.
Chilean fruit exports totalled about 3 billion US dollars according to preliminary numbers from the industry. This represents a 5% increase in revenue from the 2008-2009 season.

King crab season takes off in southern Chile; 2.600 tons were caught in 2009
Chile’s King Crab season has officially kicked off for this year. The southern king crab is a delicacy in Chile, as 90% of each year’s catch is shipped to markets in Europe, North America and Asia. In Santiago, fresh king crab starts at about 25 US dollars per pound.

Salmon farming in Chile greater environmental threat than estimated
Salmon farms in Chile are a worse threat to the environment than originally thought following on unexpected results from a German scientific research team studying communications among whales in the southern Pacific along Chilean Patagonia.
According to a report from the renowned Dynamics and Organization Department from Hanover’s Max Planck Institute and published in the latest edition of Nature, “there’s virtually no life in the areas surrounding Chilean salmon farms”.

Currently, Region X is free of the ISA virus and leads in smolt stockings.
In addition, in regions XI and XII alone there are a total of five salmon farming centres under suspicion, which demonstrates a remarkable improvement for the sector, the Aquaculture head added.

Chile Moves to Regulate and Permit Cultivation of GM Crops
Chilean Agriculture Ministry José Antonio Galilea announced this week plans to introduce legislation to regulate and permit the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops in Chile.
José Antonio Galilea said he has already formed an advisory team to study the matter and to propose legislation in June or July this year. Current legislation strictly limits transgenic crops to seed production, and all seeds must be exported. “Current policy is incomprehensible, and we believe the best way to fix it is through legislation,” said Galilea.

Chilean salmon industry leaders celebrated the decision by the Constitutional Tribunal (TC) to reject a challenge to the newly passed “Ley de Pesca” (Fishing Law).
Congress passed the controversial law in early March in an effort to help Chile's ailing 2 billion US dollars salmon industry get back on its feet. The law provides special credits for the salmon industry and – most controversially – provides salmon companies 25-year concessions to coastal waters where salmon farms are located.

Chilean fisheries exports and domestic sales down 46% in first quarter
Fishing production in Chile’s central south BioBio region (Region VIII) is still reeling in the aftermath of the Feb. 27 earthquake and tsunami.
Revenue from Chilean export and domestic sales fell 46.4% during the first three months of the year, from 412 million US dollars, measured in the same period in 2009, to 221 million USD as a result of lower production, according to the Association of Industrial Fishing, Asipes.
During the first quarter, the BioBio region experienced a considerable decrease in production lines for preserved, frozen fish and fish oil. These sectors represent just over 60% of the catch in Chile.

After meeting with Guild executives, Sonapesca General Manager, Hector Bacigalupo said 50 per cent of industry facilities in the Bio Bio region were free of damage. This included processing plants, warehouses, unloading facilities and offices.
While Mr Bacigalupo said it was too soon to determine what effect this incident will have on the industry's production, it should be noted that 50 per cent of production and catch quotas in the sector comes from the affected area, ie about 1 million tonnes of mackerel.
