Brunei Darussalam’s first Agro Technology Park, to be completed in 2012, is expected to lead the way in the country’s research and technology industry. This was revealed by Ghanim International Food Corporation Sdn Bhd’s new chief executive officer, Wahid Kandil, in an exclusive interview with the Weekend Bulletin yesterday.
The park, which will mainly house a Halal Science Centre to benefit Brunei’s Halal Brand products, “will play a fundamental role in research and development,” said the new CEO. Mr Kandil is currently awaiting the official announcement of his appointment, which is expected to be made in June during the 5th Brunei Halal Expo at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food (DAA) is planning to create an Agriculture Industry Park in Tutong to develop the district’s agricultural industry.
The area is located at a recently gazetted land of 1,348.32 hectares around the Batang Mitus to Padnunok area in Tutong, according to YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources during the 6th Legislative Council Meeting yesterday.

More than 4,900 hectares of new land has been identified and allocated in all of the four districts for the rice initiative in achieving self-sufficiency, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources said yesterday.
YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar said this in response to YB Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Hj Othman Uking’s question of new lands for the rice initiative during the sixth Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting.

A total of 1,804.15 hectares of land in the Tutong District have been gazetted for agricultural and agri-food activities, of which 605.64 hectares have been allotted to farmers and agriculture producers for development.
